Overview
The Marangu Route, famously known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is one of the most well-established and popular ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. It is the only route that offers hut accommodation, providing trekkers with more comfort compared to camping routes.
Starting from the southeastern side of the mountain, the trail passes through a variety of striking landscapes, including lush rainforest, moorland, and alpine desert. Along the way, climbers experience a steady and scenic ascent, making it a preferred option for those seeking a more moderate trekking challenge.
The route is typically completed in 5 days, however, the 6-day itinerary is highly recommended as it allows better acclimatization and significantly improves summit success rates while offering a more enjoyable pace.

Frequently Asked Questions
General
Yes. The Marangu Route is one of the more accessible Kilimanjaro routes and is popular with first-time trekkers. However, the summit day is physically demanding, so good fitness and proper preparation are essential.
Unlike most Kilimanjaro routes, Marangu uses mountain huts rather than tents. Climbers stay in shared huts with basic beds and mattresses. Sleeping bags are still required.
Summit day is the most challenging part of the trek. You typically start very early and hike for several hours to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), followed by a long descent. Cold temperatures, altitude and fatigue can make this section particularly demanding
A typical package includes park and camping/hut fees, professional mountain guides, porters, accommodation on the mountain, meals during the climb, drinking water, and transfers as specified in the itinerary. Flights, visas, travel insurance, personal equipment and tips are usually excluded.
Focus on regular cardio and hiking exercises before your trip, ideally including long uphill walks. Pack appropriate layers, waterproof hiking boots, warm clothing, gloves, a headlamp, trekking poles and a good sleeping bag. Most importantly, acclimatization and maintaining a slow, steady pace are key to improving your chances of reaching the summit
Altitude sickness can affect anyone regardless of fitness. Symptoms should be reported to your guide immediately. The guide will assess your condition and may recommend rest, descent or evacuation if necessary.
