Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be met and transferred to your hotel in Arusha. Take time to relax and recover after your journey while enjoying the welcoming atmosphere of northern Tanzania.

In the evening, meet your climbing team for a detailed briefing and complete gear check in preparation for your Mount Kilimanjaro adventure via the Umbwe Route.

After registration at Umbwe Gate, the trek begins immediately with a steep climb through dense rainforest. The trail is narrow and often muddy, winding through thick vegetation, hanging vines, and exposed tree roots.

As you ascend, the forest feels increasingly remote and wild, offering a true sense of adventure away from the more crowded routes on Kilimanjaro. The steady uphill climb demands focus and good footing throughout the day.

By late afternoon, arrive at Umbwe Cave Camp, where tents are set beneath natural rocky overhangs, providing a sheltered and unique camping experience.

The atmosphere is raw, quiet, and adventurous, marking a strong start to your Umbwe Route expedition.

Key Moment: Arrival into the “Garden of the Senecios,” home to giant groundsel plants

After leaving Umbwe Cave Camp, the trail becomes more exposed as you climb along steep ridges with striking volcanic rock formations. The landscape opens up gradually, offering your first distant views of Kilimanjaro’s upper slopes.

As you gain altitude, the environment transforms dramatically, leading you into the unique “Garden of the Senecios,” where giant groundsel plants dominate the scenery. This marks a memorable transition into the alpine zone.

By afternoon, descend slightly into the Barranco Valley and arrive at Barranco Camp, one of the most scenic campsites on the mountain.

Elevation: 3,960m → 4,035m (13,240ft)

Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

Key Challenge: Barranco Wall scramble (a steep 512m / 1,680ft section)

The day begins with the ascent of the famous Barranco Wall, a steep but

non-technical rock scramble that requires careful footing and steady progress. While challenging, it is considered one of the most rewarding sections of the route, offering impressive views once at the top.

After conquering the wall, the trail continues through ridges and gentle valleys with constantly changing scenery and wide mountain views. This section provides important acclimatization as you gradually gain altitude.

By afternoon, arrive at Karanga Camp, where you will rest and recover while preparing for the next stage of the climb.

The atmosphere is adventurous and uplifting, with a strong sense of progress as you move closer to the summit.

Hiking Time: 3–4 hours

Terrain: Alpine desert with a rugged, lunar-like landscape

After breakfast, continue a steady ascent into the high alpine desert as you make your way toward Barafu Camp, the final base before the summit attempt. The

landscape becomes increasingly barren and dramatic, with rocky terrain and minimal vegetation.

The shorter hiking time allows for rest and focused preparation for the demanding summit night ahead. Upon arrival at Barafu Camp, you will rest, hydrate, and organize your gear for the final ascent.

The atmosphere is focused and anticipatory as climbers prepare mentally and physically for the challenge of reaching Uhuru Peak.

Summit Push

• 12:00 AM: Depart Barafu Camp in freezing temperatures (around -10°C / 14°F), beginning the summit climb by headlamp.
• 5:30 AM: Arrive at Stella Point (5,756m) and witness the sunrise over the crater rim.
• 6:30 AM: Reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – the highest point in Africa. Celebrate briefly and take photos before beginning the descent.

Descent

• 11:00 AM: Return to Barafu Camp for a short rest and recovery.
• 3:00 PM: Continue descending to Mweka Camp (3,100m) for overnight stay.

After hours of climbing through the night, reaching the summit at sunrise is a

powerful and emotional achievement. The descent continues through changing landscapes back to a more comfortable altitude.

The atmosphere is exhausting, emotional, and triumphant as you complete the most challenging and rewarding day of the climb.

Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

Terrain: Dense rainforest descent

After breakfast, begin your final descent through the lush rainforest toward Mweka Gate. The trail is steep in sections and can be tough on the knees, but it is surrounded by beautiful vegetation and fresh mountain air.

As you descend, the landscape becomes greener and more humid, with birdsong and forest life accompanying your final steps on the mountain.

Upon arrival at Mweka Gate, you will receive your official summit certificate, marking the successful completion of your Mount Kilimanjaro climb.

After celebrations with your mountain team, transfer back to Arusha for a well-deserved rest.
