9 Day Mount Kilimanjaro Trekking Adventure Via Northern Circuit Route

9 Days 8 Nights

Overview

The Northern Circuit Route is the longest and most scenic trekking route on Mount Kilimanjaro, typically completed over nine days. It is widely regarded as the best route for acclimatization and summit success due to its slow and gradual ascent profile.

The journey begins on the western side of the mountain, following the Lemosho Route through lush rainforest and heath zones up to the Shira Plateau. From there, the trail turns north, circling around Kilimanjaro’s remote and rarely visited northern slopes. This section offers a peaceful trekking experience with wide, uninterrupted views stretching across the Kenyan plains.

The route passes through all major ecological zones of Kilimanjaro, including rainforest, heath, moorland, alpine desert, and the arctic summit zone. Trekkers spend multiple nights above 3,500 meters, allowing the body to adapt gradually to high altitude and significantly improving summit success rates.

It later joins the Rongai Route near Third Cave before heading toward School Hut, the final base before the summit attempt. From here, climbers ascend to Gilman’s Point on the crater rim and continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. The descent follows the Mweka Route on the southern side, completing a full circuit of the mountain.

The Northern Circuit is ideal for trekkers seeking solitude, panoramic scenery, and the highest chance of success. While it requires strong fitness and longer time on the mountain, it offers a rewarding and immersive Kilimanjaro experience away from the busier routes.
