Frequently asked questions about preparing for Kilimanjaro

How fit do I need to be to climb Kilimanjaro?

Kilimanjaro is a walk, not a technical climb, so you do not need climbing skills. You do need steady walking fitness: train with long hikes carrying a daypack, plus cardio such as stairs, running or cycling, for several weeks before you travel.

Which Kilimanjaro route is best for acclimatisation?

Longer routes such as Lemosho and Machame give your body more days to adjust to the altitude, which improves the chance of reaching the summit. Our Lemosho, Machame and Marangu route pages show the days and the price for each.

What gear do I need for Kilimanjaro?

Warm layers, a waterproof jacket and trousers, a warm hat and gloves, well broken-in walking boots, a sleeping bag rated for cold nights and trekking poles. Walking boots should be worn in before the trip so they do not cause blisters.

Do I need a guide to climb Kilimanjaro?

Yes. Climbers on Kilimanjaro must go with a licensed guide, and the guides on our climbs also look after your pace and your health on the mountain.

How do I avoid altitude sickness on Kilimanjaro?

Walk slowly (the guides say "pole pole"), drink plenty of water, eat well and tell your guide at once about a headache, nausea or dizziness. A slower route with more days is the most reliable way to help your body adjust.
