6 Day Wildebeest Calving Safari, February 2027

Every year, on the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti and Ndutu, roughly half a million wildebeest calves are born within a few weeks. A calf stands and runs within minutes of birth, and lions, cheetahs, hyenas and jackals gather to hunt. It is the most intense and the most photographed part of the Great Migration, and the main window is February.

A calf stands and runs within minutes of birth, and lions, cheetahs, hyenas and jackals gather to hunt. It is the most intense and the most photographed part of the Great Migration, and the main window is February.

Our 6 day calving safari is built for this season. It combines two nights in the Ndutu and southern Serengeti calving grounds with Tarangire’s elephants, the Ngorongoro Crater and a cultural morning at Lake Eyasi, with a private 4x4 and a professional driver-guide. It is available from USD 2,250 per person for travel from December 2026 to March 2027.

When is the calving season in 2027?

The herds follow the rains, so the exact timing moves by a couple of weeks from year to year. The pattern, however, is dependable: the herds return to the southern plains in December, the calves arrive from late January, the peak is in February, and the new families stay on the plains into March before heading north and west from April.

We watch the rains and the herd reports through the season, and we place you in the part of Ndutu and the southern Serengeti where the calving is happening on your dates. If you can choose, the best window for the birth peak is the first three weeks of February.

December 2026

The first herds arrive on the short grass and the plains turn green. Fewer vehicles, early calves and a festive-season trip with warm weather.

January 2027

The herds gather in huge numbers around Ndutu. Births begin in the second half of the month, and predators start to concentrate.

February 2027

The peak. Thousands of calves are born in a few weeks, with kills and chases every day. This is the month this safari is designed for.

March 2027

Large herds of calves, growing in confidence, still on the plains. Quieter than February, with excellent predator viewing and lower prices later in the month.

Why book now for February 2027

Ndutu is one of the smallest and most sought-after areas of the Serengeti ecosystem. Its camps are small, and the February weeks are the first to fill. Travellers who decide in October and November have the widest choice of camps and dates, and the best dates usually go first.

Booking early also lets us plan the flights, the Kilimanjaro or Zanzibar extensions and the Ngorongoro Crater timing around you. Send us your dates, and we will hold the camps while you finish your plans.

What you will see in the calving season

On the plains around Ndutu you can see herds of wildebeest and zebras stretching to the horizon, with newborn calves wobbling at their mothers’ sides within minutes. Spotted hyenas, jackals, lions and cheetahs hunt the calves, and vultures follow. The land is green, the skies are dramatic and the light for photography is excellent.

Outside the calving grounds the safari adds Tarangire National Park for elephants and baobab trees, the Ngorongoro Crater for lions and rhinos on one floor, and Lake Eyasi, where the Hadzabe and Datoga people welcome visitors. It is a varied week, not a single sight.

Calving season or river crossings?

The Mara River crossings from July to October are famous, but the calving season is more predictable and happens on open plains, with no crowd at a single riverbank. It is also warmer, greener and usually less expensive than the high season. Many guests who have done both say that the calving season gives them more to see across the day. Our Great Migration page compares the whole year.

Before you travel: insurance and visas

Since 1 October 2026, foreign visitors to mainland Tanzania need a compulsory NIC travel insurance certificate in addition to a visa. It takes a few minutes to buy online and is worth doing before you fly. We explain who needs it and how to buy it in our Tanzania mandatory travel insurance guide. You should also carry your own travel insurance, which covers cancellation and trips to remote areas.

This is an exceptional period for wildlife photography and predator sightings. Young wildebeest attract lions, cheetahs, hyenas and other predators, while large herds move across the plains in search of fresh grazing. Enjoy a picnic lunch during the safari before continuing your afternoon game drive and returning to camp around sunset. For an unforgettable perspective, you can also add an optional hot-air balloon safari over Ndutu, available at an additional cost.

Stay: Ang’ata Migration Camp. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.

Day 5: Southern Serengeti to Karatu

After breakfast, enjoy your final morning game drive in the Ndutu and Southern Serengeti region. Arrive at your lodge in the afternoon and enjoy a relaxing evening.

Stay: Farm of Dreams lodge. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.

Your 6 day Tanzania calving safari concludes in Arusha, with an optional transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport depending on your onward travel arrangements.
