Lake Manyara National Park
Lake Manyara National Park guide: groundwater forest, flamingos, hippos and tree-climbing lions below the Rift Valley, two hours from Arusha.
Lake Manyara: Lions in Trees & Pink Hues
Nestled dramatically at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, Lake Manyara National Park offers a compact yet incredibly diverse safari experience. Famous for its elusive tree-climbing lions and the vast flocks of flamingos that tinge the alkaline lake pink, Manyara provides a beautiful introduction or addition to a northern circuit safari. Explore the unique groundwater forest teeming with baboons and monkeys, drive along the scenic lakeshore watching hippos and water birds, and marvel at the stunning backdrop of the rift wall. Despite its smaller size, Manyara packs a punch with varied habitats and surprising wildlife encounters.
Highlights
- Tree-Climbing Lions — One of the best places in Tanzania to potentially spot lions resting in acacia trees. Flamingo Flocks — Witness thousands of pink flamingos wading in the alkaline lake. Abundant Birdlife — Over 400 species recorded, including waterfowl, raptors, and forest birds. Groundwater Forest — Explore a unique, lush forest environment fed by underground springs.
Wildlife
- Tree-climbing lions — famous, unpredictable. Elephants and some of Africa’s largest baboon troops. Lakeshore game: wildebeest, buffalo, hippo, flamingo, zebra, warthog, waterbuck, giraffe, dik-dik, impala. Birds: excellent raptor watching plus waterbirds; flamingo numbers swing wildly between lakes.
Things to do
- Daytime game drives — Forest, acacia and lakeshore in a few hours — the usual shape on a northern circuit. Night drives & short walks — Offered from some camps inside the park. Rim and Karatu lodges add hiking, cycling and village visits. Treetop walkway — A canopy walk through the groundwater forest — a different view from the vehicle circuit. Birding — Raptors and waterbirds; flamingos only when the lake happens to hold them.
Best time to visit
- July–October — Official peak for the regional dry-season pattern. Vegetation is thinner; lions in trees are easier to pick out. Year-round as a stop — Game densities never match Tarangire or the crater. If you are driving past, Manyara is still worth a few hours in any month.
