Mikumi National Park
Mikumi National Park guide: elephants, giraffes and lions on the Mkata floodplain, by road from Dar es Salaam or a short flight from Zanzibar.
A practical fly-in day from the coast or Dar
Mikumi is open grassland and a practical fly-in day trip from the coast or Dar es Salaam — a taste of the savannah when time is short. It sits on the southern circuit as a first or last park: zebra, giraffe, and lion on the plains, without the logistics of a full Ruaha stay.
Highlights
- Accessible savannah — Useful from Dar or as a fly-in from Zanzibar. Open grassland — Classic plains game in a compact park.
Wildlife
- Plains: zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, buffalo, elephant, lion. Hippo pools and a strong bird list along water. Not a wild-dog or boat-safari park — that is Nyerere, further south.
Things to do
- Game drives — Half-day or full-day on the Mkata floodplain. Fly-in or road day — From Dar or Zanzibar when you want wildlife without a long circuit. Overnight — Worth it for a dawn drive rather than a midday dash from the city.
Best time to visit
- June–October — Best visibility on the plains; animals nearer remaining water. Green season — Lush and quieter; still workable as a day or an overnight from Dar.
