Zanzibar Archipelago
Zanzibar holiday guide: the best beaches, Stone Town, spice tours, dolphins and snorkelling, and how to combine the island with a Tanzania safari.
Discover the Zanzibar Archipelago
Beyond the famous main island lies the captivating Zanzibar Archipelago, a collection of islands scattered in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Tanzania. From the historical depths of Stone Town and the aromatic allure of spice plantations to the pristine beaches ideal for relaxation and vibrant coral reefs perfect for diving and snorkeling. The heart and soul of Zanzibar, Stone Town is a maze of narrow streets, historic buildings, and bustling markets. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it bears witness to the island’s rich trading history. The archipelago includes Unguja (the main island) and Pemba Island, known as the “Green Island” for its lush hills and clove production.

Things to do
- Beach time — Nungwi, Kendwa, Pongwe, Paje, Matemwe — chosen for tide, crowds and hotel style, not a single “best beach.” Stone Town & spice tour — A walking day in the old city plus a plantation. Two nights in town is plenty for most people. Snorkel and dive — East and north reefs from Unguja; Pemba for serious diving; Mafia for whale sharks in season. Jozani & dhow sunset — Red colobus in forest; traditional sail at the end of the day.
Best time to visit
- July–October — Prime dry weather, calm seas, and the best window to combine with Selous or Ruaha. December–February — Warm, generally good beach days. Whale sharks at Mafia October–March. April–May (and November) — Long rains in April–May; short rains in November. We avoid these if sunshine is the point.
