Ten days lets you do Tanzania properly: the Serengeti, the Great Migration, the Ngorongoro Crater, a cultural day and a few days to rest. It is the length where a safari stops feeling like a rush and becomes a journey.
Our long safaris start from USD 3,650 per person and can be combined with Zanzibar or Kilimanjaro.
What you can do in 10 days
A 10 day trip can include Tarangire, Lake Manyara, a cultural day at Lake Eyasi or a Maasai village, four nights in the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater. Ten days also allows you to visit two parts of the Serengeti, which is the best way to see the migration if you are not certain where the herds will be.
The other popular plan is seven days on safari and three days on Zanzibar. Our 10 day Tanzania and Zanzibar itinerary guide has day-by-day details.
Cultural experiences
Tanzania is more than wildlife. At Lake Eyasi you can join the Hadzabe, one of the last hunter-gatherer communities in Africa, on a morning hunt. A Maasai village visit gives you an insight into a pastoral life that continues alongside the parks. Many travellers say these days are as memorable as the game drives.
When to travel for a 10 day safari
The long dry season from June to October is the most reliable. For a calving season trip, go in late January to early March. For fewer visitors and lower prices, try late May to early June or November.
A balanced 10 day plan
Days 1 to 3: Tarangire and Lake Manyara
Elephants, baobabs and the forest, with a gentle start to the trip.
Day 4: Lake Eyasi and the Hadzabe
A cultural day with a morning hunt and a visit to the Datoga blacksmiths.
Days 5 to 8: the Serengeti
Four nights in two areas, tracking the herds, with a balloon flight if you wish.
Day 9: Ngorongoro Crater
A morning in the crater and a night on the rim.
Day 10: Return to Arusha
A relaxed drive back and an evening flight or a hotel night.
Ten days on safari and on the coast
Another popular plan is seven days on safari and three on Zanzibar. A flight from the Serengeti or Arusha to Zanzibar takes just a few hours, and you can be on the beach the next morning. This is the classic honeymoon and the reward after a long trip.
Ten days or two weeks?
If you have two weeks, you can add Kilimanjaro or Mount Meru, a southern park such as Ruaha or Nyerere, and several days on Zanzibar. We build these longer trips from many parts, and we are happy to talk through the order and the timing.
Add Lake Eyasi, Ndutu or the north
On a ten day safari you can add the places that make a trip distinctive. Lake Eyasi gives you the Hadzabe and Datoga. Ndutu in the calving season gives you thousands of newborn calves. The northern Serengeti gives you the river crossings in the dry season. We pick the extras with you, depending on your dates and what you most want to see.
Packing for a longer safari
On a ten day trip you will want clothes for different climates: cool mornings at the crater rim, hot days in Tarangire and a warm evening in Zanzibar. Take a small bag for flights between the parks, and leave your main luggage in Arusha. Laundry is often available at lodges, which means you can pack lightly.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a 10 day safari in Tanzania cost?
A midrange 10 day safari starts from USD 3,650 per person for two sharing, and luxury trips cost much more.
Can I combine a 10 day safari with Kilimanjaro?
Yes. Many travellers climb Kilimanjaro first and then relax on safari. We plan both in one booking.
Is a 10 day safari too long?
Not if the itinerary is varied. We balance game drives with cultural visits and rest days.
Can I include Kilimanjaro in a 10 day trip?
A Kilimanjaro climb takes at least six days, so a combined trip needs about two weeks. We can plan it so you climb first and relax on safari afterwards.
Is it safe to travel for ten days in Tanzania?
Yes. Your driver-guide stays with you throughout, and our Arusha office monitors the trip and is available by phone.
