What a 6 day safari covers
The standard 6 day route is Tarangire, Lake Manyara, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater. Tarangire is for elephants and baobabs, Lake Manyara for forest and flamingos, the Serengeti for big cats and plains wildlife, and the crater for a high concentration of animals in one day. With six days, you can add a second night in the Serengeti, which makes a big difference to the amount of wildlife you see.
A sample 6 day plan
Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire. Day 2: Tarangire to Lake Manyara and onwards to Karatu. Day 3: the Ngorongoro highlands to the Serengeti. Day 4: a full day in the Serengeti. Day 5: a morning game drive and the crater rim. Day 6: the Ngorongoro Crater and the return to Arusha. Variations include an extra night at Ndutu in the calving season or a visit to a Hadzabe community at Lake Eyasi.
Why six days works well
Five-day safaris are a compromise, with long driving days and little time to linger. Six days gives you an extra night, so you spend more time in the park and less on the road. Many families and older travellers find it much more comfortable.
Six days for older travellers and families
Many older travellers and families with children choose six days because the driving days are shorter and the rest days longer. The extra night in the Serengeti or at Lake Manyara means fewer early starts and more time to enjoy the lodge. If comfort matters, six days is often better than five, and cheaper than seven.
Add a cultural day
With six days you can include a cultural visit at Lake Eyasi or in a Maasai community, which adds people to the wildlife. A morning with the Hadzabe hunter-gatherers is one of the most memorable experiences in northern Tanzania.
Midrange, luxury and budget at 6 days
Midrange is the most popular choice, with comfortable lodges and tented camps. Luxury safaris often fly between the parks and use smaller camps. The budget version uses simple lodges and shares the route, with the same park fees and a lower accommodation cost.
Day by day: a 6 day northern circuit safari
Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire
A two hour drive to Tarangire, an afternoon game drive and a night at a lodge on the edge of the park.
Day 2: Tarangire to Lake Manyara
A morning game drive in Tarangire, then a drive to Lake Manyara and a night near the Rift Valley escarpment.
Day 3: Into the Serengeti
A morning visit to the Manyara forest, followed by the drive via the Ngorongoro highlands to the Serengeti, arriving in time for an afternoon game drive.
Day 4: The Serengeti
A full day in the Serengeti, with morning and afternoon game drives, following the herds or searching for big cats.
Day 5: Serengeti to Ngorongoro
A last Serengeti game drive and a transfer to the crater rim, where you spend the night with a view of the caldera.
Day 6: Crater and return to Arusha
A morning game drive in the crater, a picnic lunch and the return to Arusha in the late afternoon.
Six days with an added cultural visit
Many travellers replace the visit to Lake Manyara with a cultural day at Lake Eyasi, where you meet the Hadzabe and Datoga people. It adds a human story to the wildlife, and many guests say it is the most memorable day of the trip. Ask us if you want to include it.
