1 Day Kilimanjaro Day Hike Via Lemosho Route
Hike Kilimanjaro in one day from Arusha or Moshi via the Lemosho Route, up to the Shira Plateau at 3,600 m. From USD 320 per person in a group.
A Kilimanjaro day hike is the best option if you do not have the time or budget to climb to the summit. You get up high and enjoy some of the best views on the mountain, without paying the full price, and get a taste of Africa’s highest mountain (Uhuru Peak, 5,895 m). The day starts early from Arusha or Moshi (the drive takes about 2.5 to 3.5 hours) with an early breakfast, then the drive to Kilimanjaro National Park. The hike begins on the western side of the mountain at Londorossi Gate (2,100 m) and climbs more than 1,000 m steadily through tropical mountain forest, home to colobus monkeys, crested turacos and other birdlife; you may even hear elephants rumbling through the trees. The route reaches the vast Shira Plateau at about 3,600 m, a 500,000-year-old volcanic caldera. Stop here for lunch, or continue towards Shira 1 Camp, Lion Gorge and the foothills of the Shira Pinnacles, with views of Kibo’s snow-covered summit and neighbouring glaciers. It is a day hike, but the fast pace and elevation make it exhausting, so do not underestimate it. Bring a rain jacket and sweater, hiking trousers, sunscreen, walking sticks, hiking boots and a cap or hat.
