Our 4 day safaris start from USD 1,800 per person and include midrange, luxury and migration-season options.
A typical 4 day itinerary
Day 1 drives from Arusha to Tarangire or Lake Manyara for an afternoon game drive. Day 2 crosses the Ngorongoro highlands into the Serengeti. Day 3 is a full day in the Serengeti, searching for lions, leopards and elephants, and following the herds in season. Day 4 is a morning descent into the Ngorongoro Crater and a return to Arusha in the evening.
Ndutu and the calving season
From December to March the herds are on the southern plains near Ndutu, where the calving season gives some of the best predator action of the year. A 4 day safari to Ndutu and the crater is a good way to see this without committing to a long trip. See our calving season options below, and our Great Migration page.
Road or fly-in?
A road safari is lower cost and lets you see the landscape. A fly-in saves a day of driving and gives you two full days in the Serengeti. If you choose a fly-in, you travel with less luggage because the planes have a limit of about 15 kilograms in a soft bag.
Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro: the logic of 4 days
Four days is the shortest length where the geography works. You can reach the Serengeti by road on day two, spend most of day three there and return through the crater on day four. The pace is brisk but not exhausting, especially with a fly-in alternative that replaces day one or day two with a flight.
Midrange or luxury for 4 days
On a short safari it is worth spending a little more on the location of the camp. A camp in the central Serengeti saves hours of driving each day, and a lodge on the crater rim means you reach the crater floor early. Our midrange packages use comfortable lodges, and the luxury ones use camps in the park itself and a flight.
Add a hot air balloon
A sunrise balloon flight is a highlight of a short Serengeti safari. It lasts an hour and replaces the early morning game drive on day three. Book it early, because the flights are limited and the seats sell out.
Day by day: a 4 day Serengeti and crater safari
Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire or Lake Manyara
A morning drive takes you to the park, where you spend the afternoon on a game drive among elephants and baobab trees, or on the shore of Lake Manyara. You sleep in a lodge near the Ngorongoro highlands.
Day 2: Ngorongoro highlands to the Serengeti
You pass the crater rim, descend onto the plains and arrive in the Serengeti in time for lunch and an afternoon game drive. You sleep in the park.
Day 3: Full day in the Serengeti
A full day of game drives with a picnic lunch, following the herds or searching for big cats, and a sundowner at the end of the day.
Day 4: Serengeti to Arusha through the crater
An early drive back via the Ngorongoro Crater, with a descent into the caldera if time allows, and the return to Arusha in the evening.
How to choose the best 4 day safari
Look at where you will sleep, not only at the name of the park. A night in the central Serengeti is worth more than a night at a lodge outside the gate. Check whether the crater visit is a full morning or a quick stop, and whether the itinerary includes a flight. Ask for the exact driving times each day, because the biggest difference between a good and a tiring four day safari is the amount of time spent in the vehicle.

Frequently asked questions
Is 4 days enough for the Serengeti and Ngorongoro?
Yes. It gives you one full day in each, plus a travel day on either side.
How much does a 4 day safari cost?
A midrange 4 day private safari starts from about USD 1,800 per person. Luxury and fly-in versions cost more.
Can I add Zanzibar?
Yes. A short flight takes you from the Serengeti or Arusha to Zanzibar, and we can combine both in one booking.
Can I see the Great Migration in 4 days?
Yes, if you choose the right area for the month. In January to March we plan the southern Serengeti and Ndutu, and in July to October the north with a fly-in.
How much driving is involved?
On the road version you drive about four to six hours on days one, two and four. A fly-in replaces one of those days with a flight of about one hour.
